DLBC Leadership Issues Statement on Devastating Fire at Mother African Union Church

May 18, 2026

WILMINGTON – In response to the devastating fire at the historic Mother African Union Church in Wilmington, Delaware Legislative Black Caucus Chair, Rep. Nnamdi Chukwuocha, and Vice-Chair, Rep. Frank Cooke, issued the following statement:

“We are heartbroken by the devastating fire that destroyed Mother African Union Church. For more than 200 years, this church has stood as a symbol of faith, resilience, strength, and community for generations of Wilmington families.

“While the flames caused significant damage to the physical structure, they cannot erase the legacy, impact, or spirit of this historic church. The foundation built by generations of members, families, and community leaders will continue to live on throughout Wilmington and far beyond its walls.

“We are keeping Rev. Dr. Ronald Whitaker II, the congregation, and the entire community in our prayers during this time. We also want to thank the firefighters and first responders who worked around the clock to protect surrounding residents and homes throughout this emergency.”
