John Lewis Voting Rights Act: House Bill 444, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, passed this session. HB 444 restores and strengthens the most important protections against voting discrimination that Delawareans once enjoyed under the federal Voting Rights Act, which the Supreme Court recently rolled back in Louisiana v. Callais. The legislation protects Delaware voters from unfair voting practices, such as the increase in racially discriminatory redistricting that is now taking place across the country. HB 444 prohibits election practices that suppress, dilute, or discriminate against voters, regardless of intent. It gives individuals, organizations, and the Attorney General an avenue to bring motions forward to challenge potential discriminatory legal practices. Delaware joined a movement to implement state-level voting rights protections for all voters in the state.
